How to Choose the Right Artwork Size for Your Wall

You’ve found the perfect piece — it suits your style, your palette, your vibe. But is it the right size for your space? Choosing the correct artwork dimensions is just as important as the art itself. Too small, and it disappears. Too large, and it overwhelms.

At Objectmatter, we believe that sizing is an art in itself. Here’s a simple, foolproof guide to help you find the ideal fit — whether for a hallway, living room, or bedroom.

1. Measure Your Wall — Then Your Eye Level

Start with the basics:

  • Measure the total wall width and height

  • Mark the center point at eye level (around 57–60 inches from the floor) — this is your visual anchor

🖼️ Most art should hang with its center at eye level for balanced composition.

2. Use the 2/3 Rule for Furniture Pairing

When hanging art above furniture (like a sofa or bed), follow the two-thirds rule:

The artwork’s width should be about ⅔ the width of the furniture below it.

Examples:

  • Above a 6-foot sofa → Artwork should be around 48 inches wide

  • Above a king-size bed → Go for 36–54 inches wide, or use a diptych/triptych layout

3. Choose the Right Size Category

Here’s a quick cheat sheet to match artwork sizes with wall types:

Artwork Size Best For
A3 (11.7" x 16.5") Gallery walls, shelves, small nooks
A2 (16.5" x 23.4") Small feature areas, hallway clusters
A1 (23.4" x 33.1") Bedrooms, dining corners, entryways
A0 (33.1" x 46.8") Living rooms, above large beds/sofas

🖼️ All Objectmatter artworks are available in A3 to A0 sizing, so you can scale perfectly.

4. Go Big in Minimal Spaces

If your room is minimalist, a larger artwork can serve as a striking focal point.
Oversized Wabi-Sabi or Color Field pieces work beautifully on clean walls, especially when paired with sculptural lighting or textured rugs.

5. Don’t Overcrowd the Wall

Avoid placing multiple small pieces on a large wall unless you're doing a gallery-style cluster. Give your art breathing space to enhance its presence.

Less is more. But the right size is everything.

Final Tip: Visualize Before You Buy

Use tape or masking paper to map out the artwork size on your wall before ordering. This helps you feel the scale in your actual space.
